Five-Peat: Kenyan Runner Julius Kogo Wins Crim's 10-Mile Race Again

Published by MLive on August 23, 2014

Kenyan runner Julius Kogo is $5,000 richer.

Like clockwork, Kogo won the 10 Mile race at the 38th annual HealthPlus Crim Festival of Races on Saturday, Aug. 23, for an unprecedented fifth year in a row.

His time was 46.35 to take the top purse again.

Maybe it's time for the Crim Fitness Foundation to think about putting him on the payroll.

"It was very hard to run because many people are coming to beat me," Kogo said. "So I trained for that to make me better."

He loves the summer heat, but didn't mind the 64-degree foggy weather of Flint. Kogo says he took the lead around the ninth mile.

His training buddy, Ngetich Cleophas, another native of Kenya, placed second, crossing the finish line around 20 seconds behind the five-time champion runner. Working alongside Kogo in Chapel Hill, N.C., for the past two years made him a better runner.

"This is my first Crim," Cleophas said.

On the women's side, another Kenyan Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton repeated as champion. She finished in 54.26. Tuliamuk-Bolton, 25, was motivated by the guys in front of her after separating herself from most of the women in the opening mile.
