Course record by women’s champion Sara Hall; an event record of more 4,000 finishers from 29 states bring energy and enthusiasm to Pittsburgh’s favorite fall road race

Press Release

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Traversing five city neighborhoods and four bridges, more than 4,000 finishers took on the 2nd EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler—Pittsburgh’s premier fall road race. Runners rejoiced at favorable weather conditions with temperatures in the high 30s and overcast skies for the start of the race.

The road race boasted a deep elite field that ensured an exciting finish for the men’s and women’s race. Through the hilly first three miles, Kenyans Leonard Korir, 27, Nelson Oyugi, 24, and Team USA Minnesota member Jonathan Grey, 26, led the front of the male pack, setting a swift 4:41 minute per mile pace. Korir and Oyugi pulled away to later cross the finish line just 4 seconds apart with Korir claiming the men’s title in 46 minutes, 52 seconds—just two seconds shy of the course record.

Grey was the first American male and took home an extra $1000 as part of the Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc.’s (P3R) inaugural American Development Program, finishing 5th overall in 48:16.

"The course ran slower than last year; it was pretty windy today but it was a very solid course and a great test," Grey said. "It was a great springboard for the rest of my season."

In the women’s race, 2012 USA Cross Country champion Sara Hall, UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon record holder Sophy Jepchirchir, 20, and Ethiopian Buze Diriba, 20, battled right down to the finish. Hall, 31, outkicked Diriba to break the finish line tape first to claim the top overall and American female titles—both Hall and Diriba finished with an official time of 53:47, a new race record. Jepchirchir took home bronze with a 54:19 clocking. Hall received the $2500 race champion’s purse plus the top U.S. prize of $1000, bringing her total winnings to $3500.

"I had an incredible time at the EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler," Hall said. "The course was very fun, the hills and bridges and plentiful turns made it go by fast, and the sprint finish made it exciting. I loved how friendly and excited the Pittsburgh running community was to have us here. I hope to be back soon."

Eric Anish, 46, of Pittsburgh was the top male Masters finisher in 57:49, while Lisa Lucas, 48, of Pittsburgh was the top female Master in 1:03:18.

P3R CEO Patrice Matamoros echoed the energy of the race: "With such a competitive international and American elite field, we had great racing today in Pittsburgh. Thank you to the Pittsburgh community, police and volunteers for supporting the more than 4,000 runners on the course today."
