Former Champ Florence Kiplagat to Skip World Half Marathon in Denmark

Published by Shanghai Daily on March 4, 2014

Berlin Marathon champion Florence Kiplagat will not be running at the World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark on March 29.

Athletics Kenya (AK) withdrew Kiplagat's name citing fatigue as she focused on making an attempt to win her first London Marathon on April 13.

Kiplagat made headlines when she raced to victory at the Barcelona Half Marathon last month in a new world record of one hour five minutes and 12 seconds, beating the previous best of 1: 05:50 set by compatriot Mary Keitany in Ras Al Khaimah in February 2011.

"Athletics Kenya has come up with the final list of athletes for the World Half Marathon Championships. The selected team departs on March 20. The selection was based on World ranking and availability," said Athletics Kenya spokesperson Evans Bosire.

Kiplagat was in the provisional list, but has opted out of the team to focus on the London marathon, as she bids her time eyeing the World Marathon Majors crown, which comes with 500,000 U.S. dollars jackpot.

"I will only run in London. I felt so well from the beginning up to the end in Barcelona Half marathon with the weather being perfect. Now after setting the world record, the target is to win in London in fast time," Kiplagat said.
