Martin named USATF Athlete of the Week12/22/2011
INDIANAPOLIS - Kathryn Martin (Northpoint, N.Y.) has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting an age-group American record for 15 km in 1:01:23 at the Ted Corbitt 15 km in Central Park on Dec. 17. At 60-years-old, Martin finished as the 14th woman overall and first in her age group. Martin improved the previously listed 60-64 record set by Shirley Matson in 2003 by nearly three minutes. Martin’s time is also a world best for women age 60 and over. This is Martin’s second time to be named Athlete of the Week in 2011. She also received the honor on October 5 after setting an age-group American record in the 5 km. Now in its tenth year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
