$5000 U.S.-only bonus part of the American Development Program; top fields expected at second edition on Sunday, Nov. 9

Press Release

Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc. (P3R) has announced that U.S. half-marathon record holder Ryan Hall and 4-time world championship team member Sara Hall, husband and wife, will run the 2nd EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler. The race, scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 9, features a guaranteed prize purse of $15,500, including $2500 for each race champion plus new American-only bonuses totaling $5000 as part of P3R’s inaugural American Development Program.

Ryan Hall, 31, holds the U.S. record at the half-marathon distance, clocking 59 minutes, 43 seconds, and the two-time U.S. Olympian has run the fastest marathon all-time by an American (2:04:58 at Boston 2011). Hall will face a formidable men’s field that includes two-time Olympic steeplechase finalist Nahom Mesfin of Ethiopia and 1:01 half-marathoner Leonard Korir of Kenya. Top Americans in the field include first American at last year’s race and former U.S. 25K record holder Fernanda Cabada and Team USA Minnesota teammates Jonathan Grey and Jonathan Peterson.

“I'm excited to see where my fitness is at and test myself against a fast course with great competition,” said Ryan Hall. “I've never raced a 10-mile before, so I'm looking forward to the experience of racing the distance for the first time.”

Sara Hall, 31, with a 10-mile personal record of 52:54 has the fastest time in this year’s women’s field. Challenging her will be Gina Valgoi and Emily Gordon also from Team USA Minnesota, along with EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler alum Kaitlin Gregg Goodman.

“My first and only 10 mile race was earlier this year at the USA 10 Mile Championships,” said Sara Hall. “It was an exciting race, as I knew I was on American record pace and loved the race distance. This race will fall early in the season for me, and my goal is to be competitive for the win and get the most out of myself.”

Last year’s inaugural race, with more than 3,900 finishers, was won by Kenyans Elijah Muturi Karanja and Sarah Kiptoo in 46:50 and 53:56, respectively.

The 2014 event expects to have more than 6,000 participants. The 10-mile road race starts near Station Square, takes participants through a scenic tour of five Pittsburgh neighborhood and crosses four bridges before finishing at EQT Plaza on Liberty Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh.

The EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler, sponsored by the EQT Foundation, is the last of three events this year in P3R’s inaugural American Development Program that offers exposure and incentives to America’s best and upcoming runners.
