In Training With Deena Kastor

Published by World Running on February 25, 2015

Almost a decade after breaking the tape at the London Marathon in an American record of 2:19:36, Deena Kastor is still challenging the record books.

Kastor, 42, set US over-40 records at 10-miles (55:13) and 20km (68:18) en route to victory in the Dallas Half Marathon last year in 71:57, which was a mere seven seconds outside the US over-40 record.

Kastor claimed that mark a few weeks later in New York with 71:38 before rolling back the years with a marvellous 69:37 world over-40 record - her fastest time since 2006 - in the Philadelphia Half Marathon in September.

Ahead of preparing for her next event, Deena took time out to chat to worldrunning.com....

Worldrunning.com: First of all, tell us what  a typical day in the life of Deena Kastor consists of?

Deena Kastor: As a mum, wife, professional runner, brand ambassador for ASICS and president of the Mammoth Track Club, I don’t have typical days!

How do you keep yourself motivated during training? Surely there are days when you don’t particularly feel like going out to run or train...

I always feel like running because running is where I test my strength and grow. I love to see progress in myself as a person, and running allows me to find the path to being better, stronger and wiser.
